City of Justin Receives Green Ribbon Award

With the estimated completion of the FM 156 construction project set for December of this year, Justin residents and business owners may finally be able to see the end in sight.  This project, which kicked off April 2017, consists of over 4 miles of improvements on FM 156 from SH 114 through the northern end of Justin.  The project is now nearing completion, and the future certainly looks green!

The City of Justin was recently awarded funding through the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Green Ribbon Landscaping Initiative.  This funding, in the amount of just over $960,000, will be used for irrigation and landscaping a portion of the FM 156 right-of-way.  The plan, which will be managed by TxDOT, is to install trees, shrubs, and flowers along the sides of the roadway and in several medians.

Earlier this year, the Justin City Council entered into an agreement with the Denton County Commissioners Court on the design of the roadway landscaping.  With the assistance of the City’s Planning & Engineering firm, Pacheco Koch, the City of Justin partnered with Denton County Commissioners Court to submit the Green Ribbon application.  Preliminary design has been completed for the entire corridor between SH 114 and FM 1384, though the funding awarded at this time is only for the first phase of the project, extending from 6th Street south to the Trail Creek bridge.

Upon receiving news of the award, Justin Mayor, Alan Woodall, said, “What a tremendous feeling of satisfaction and gratitude we have, that the City’s application warranted such a robust award.  This will culminate many years of focused labors to upgrade and beautify FM 156.  We wish to publicly express our gratitude to the County Commissioners Court and TxDOT for their tireless work on this project and their constant support and partnership.”

The City will continue to refine the design plans over the coming months, and anticipates an open house to share the design with the public early next year.  Construction is anticipated to begin late 2020.
